Paul Bassler
Medical Device Quality Assurance, Regulatory Compliance, Mechanical Engineering
Paul is a mechanical engineer with expertise in manufacturing automation, product development, and medical device regulatory affairs. He founded PASB Technical Solutions (PASB) in 2017 and has been providing consulting services to established corporate clients and start-up firms in the areas of medical device quality assurance and regulatory affairs, manufacturing technology and new product development.
Sarah Bassler
Medical Device Quality Assurance, Regulatory Compliance, Chemical Engineering
Sarah is a seasoned engineering and regulatory professional with over 15 years of diverse experience in government, consulting, industry, and research in several jurisdictions. A chemical engineer by training, in 2019 Sarah joined PASB Technical Solutions and pivoted to the medical devices industry, offering regulatory affairs and quality consulting services to the medical devices industry. Sarah works with large and small medical devices firms on regulatory strategy, quality system development and implementation, and obtaining market authorization.
Dr. Tom Cooper
Management Consulting, Risk Management, Business Strategy
Dr. Tom Cooper lectures in the areas of strategy, risk management, management consulting, and ethics/values at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research is primarily focused on the interplay between strategy and risk management. Dr. Cooper’s research has been published widely in industry and academic publications. He has won a number of awards for his research, teaching and engagement activities. Prior to taking his position at Memorial University, Dr. Cooper was a senior manager in PwC’s Performance Improvement Consulting practice in London, UK. He is an active facilitator with the Gardiner Centre at Memorial, a business advisor, board member, and is a Certified Management Consultant
Noel Courage
Intellectual Property Law, International Commercialization, Research and Licencing Agreements
Noel Courage is a partner in the intellectual property law firm Bereskin & Parr LLP. He is a lawyer and a US and Canadian patent agent. Noel helps companies with patenting of life science inventions. He also advises on legal issues in collaborations, such as research agreements and license agreements. Noel has been helping companies and universities commercialize their inventions internationally for over 20 years.
Dr. Hu Liu
Drug Discovery and Delivery, Pharmaceutical Research
Dr. Liu is the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research for the Memorial University School of Pharmacy. An experienced entrepreneur and health innovator, Dr. Liu focuses on drug discovery and delivery research. This encompasses all aspects of the delivery, development, administration, and use of therapeutic drugs, leading to better treatment options. It includes the definition and characterization of macromolecular substrates that serve as targets for drug design. When a new drug is discovered, it must also be determined if that drug can be delivered to the right part of the body in order to be effective.
Chuck Love
Investment and Venture Capital, Business Leadership, Patents
Charles “Chuck” Love is the founder and CEO of Venture Sciences Group (VSG). Prior to VSG, Chuck held strategic executive roles for companies pursing cutting-edge medical technologies including the Medtronic CoreValve transcatheter heart valve, Circulite Synergy ventricular assist system, and Endologix Nellix AAA graft. He been directly involved in the design and clinical application of 6 different heart valves, and holds seminal patents in the field of cardiac and vascular surgery. Chuck has been an active investor, adviser or board member to a number of exciting med-tech start-ups including Loma Vista Medical, LimFlow, Foldax, Neptune Medical, and BreatheSuite. Mr. Love holds 25 patents in the medical device field.
Dr. Dave Morgan
Privacy Consulting, Sensitive Data, Digital Data Management
Dave is the principal consultant for Morgan Privacy Consulting, a full service privacy consulting firm based in St. John’s, NL. Following his time working in privacy software, Dave led the privacy portfolio at the NL Centre for Health Information, where he contributed to the development of the provincial Electronic Health Record. In 2017, Dave chaired the statutory review of the Newfoundland and Labrador Personal Health Information Act. Dave has a Ph.D. in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, holds the FIP, CIPM, CIPP/C, and CIPP/US designations from the IAPP, and has completed the Fundamentals of OCAP® course from the First Nations Information Governance Centre.
Andrew Murphy
Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Entrepreneurship
Andrew is a mechanical engineer, product designer and entrepreneur with extensive experience taking product ideas from napkin sketch concept through to high-volume production. His expertise includes problem/idea exploration, brainstorming, physical product design, electronics integration, human factors, UI/UX, prototyping, design for manufacturing, customer experience design, and Business-to-Business / Business-to-Consumers.
Dr. Luke Pike
Venture Capital, Genomics, Immunotherapy
Dr. Luke R.G. Pike, MD DPhil was elected to the Rhodes Scholarship, through which he obtained a D.Phil. at Oxford University in cancer research, with a focus on identifying new ways to kill cancer cells that survive the hypoxic environment of breast tumours. After Oxford, Luke obtained a medical degree at Yale where he learned clinical medicine. He did further training in medicine and radiation oncology at Harvard University, where he treated cancer patients and continued his research. During this time, Luke also worked as a Senior Associate at Third Rock Ventures, the world’s most esteemed biotech-focused early stage venture capital firm, where he helped to build two new companies. Luke has accepted a position as a physician-investigator in radiation oncology at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City (#2 cancer center in the USA), and assistant professor at Weil-Cornell Medical School, where he will treat patients with prostate cancer and brain tumors with advanced radiosurgical techniques, in addition to continuing research in cancer genomics and immunotherapy.
Dr. Fanny Sie
Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health, Oncology
Dr. Sie is the Director of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health and Oncology At Roche; the world’s number 1 in biotech with 14 biopharmaceuticals on the market. Over half of the compounds in their product pipeline are Bounce Health Innovation Health Sciences Centre Suite 4M401 300 Prince Philip Drive St. John’s, NL A1B 3V6 22 22 biopharmaceuticals, enabling them to deliver better-targeted therapies. Prior to this role Dr. Sie served as the National Projects Director for Canada Health Infoway (CHI). The Mandate of CHI is to drive access to better healthcare using quality digital health tools.
Dr. Andrew Smith
Emergency Medicine, Research & Development, Financing
Dr. Smith is an ER physician as well as co-founder and CEO of JVPLabs – a start-up company focused on developing innovative technologies designed to enhance care for patients with congestive heart failure. Andrew has helped the team at JVPLabs advance through research & development, quality system implementation (aligned with ISO13485), financing, and regulatory approval of their first medical device, the JVPez. Recently, Andrew relocated to Vancouver where he is working as an ER physician at the Richmond Emergency Department while simultaneously growing JVPLabs. In addition, Andrew is also an engineer having completed a Master degree in electrical engineering prior to his medical studies.
Dr. Andrew Smith

Andrew is an experienced Professional Mechanical Engineer and leader with over 25 years’ experience in diverse fields. As an independent contractor with expertise in R&D, Continuous Improvement (LEAN) human-centered design, mechanisms, simulation, 3D design, prototyping, design-for-manufacture, injection molding, and production line planning, and planning, he can help grow your production and business. He holds several patents, and has numerous successful consumer and industrial designs in use in a variety of industries including medical/dental, retail, scientific equipment, food and beverage processing, and manufacturing equipment.
Brett Vokey
Entrepreneurship, Start-Up Leadership, Medical Device Manufacture
Brett Vokey is the Founder & CEO of BreatheSuite, one of the first ever medical technology companies to come out of Newfoundland and Labrador. Brett has been recognized for his efforts in medical innovation by being named a Top 30 Under 30 by Atlantic Business Magazine and being named a “Top 10 Up and Comer” by Entrevestor. Being one of the first companies to spin out of Bounce, BreatheSuite has been recognized on the world stage at the Startup World Cup, and was most recently awarded one of the Top 25 Canadian early stage startups by Branham Group.
Mandy Woodland

Mandy Woodland is a reformed commercial lawyer and molecular biologist and the cofounder of recently launched Jellyfish, working to help business owners achieve their own vision of success through bespoke innovation and design strategy. She loves to talk about design thinking, innovation strategy, inbound marketing, health tech, side hustles, and making things happen.
