Patent Realities for Life Science Companies

Gloves Off: Patent Realities for Life Science Companies
April 29, 2026 | 10-11:20 a.m. ADT | Hybrid

Hosted by Springboard, Life Sciences Nova Scotia, PEI BioAlliance, Bounce, Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub, ResearchNB

Building a strong patent portfolio in the life sciences industry isn’t just about innovation—it’s about strategy, timing, and making tough financial decisions. Gloves Off: Patent Realities for Life Science Companies is a candid, no-nonsense workshop designed to give founders and innovators a clear view of what it really takes to protect intellectual property in this space.

This session dives into the true costs of patenting—from initial filings to multi-jurisdictional prosecution—and unpacks realistic timelines that often stretch 3–7+ years. Attendees will gain practical insight into how to prioritize filings when budgets are tight, when it may actually make sense not to patent, and how to leverage alternative strategies such as trade secrets.

Whether you’re building your first IP strategy or reassessing your current approach, this workshop will help you make smarter, more informed decisions with limited resources.

Speaker:

David Nauman
Patent Agent, Partner, BLG

David Nauman is a registerd patent agent in Canada and the US, specializing in patent protection strategy for clients in the life sciences and manufacturing sectors. He advises corporate, government, and academic organizations on building and managing patent portfolios, with expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemistry, and oil and gas.

SiftMed Targeting 4x Growth

SiftMed: Targeting 4x Growth as Demand Builds for AI-Powered Clinical Documentation

At Bounce Health Innovation, we’re proud to spotlight companies reaching defining growth milestones — and SiftMed is continuing to build strong momentum. The Newfoundland and Labrador–based healthtech company is setting its sights on quadrupling its annual recurring revenue, signalling a new phase of growth.

SiftMed is tackling a well-known challenge in healthcare: the time and effort required for clinical documentation. Its AI-powered platform captures and structures clinical conversations, helping physicians complete documentation more efficiently while staying focused on patient care.

As healthcare systems increasingly look to AI to improve workflows, SiftMed is gaining traction with providers across North America. The company’s approach centres on fitting into existing clinical environments, making it easier for teams to adopt without adding complexity.

Rather than rapid expansion for its own sake, SiftMed’s growth reflects a focus on building a product that responds to real clinical needs. That foundation is helping position the company for continued scale as demand for AI-enabled solutions grows.

This milestone reflects a broader shift in healthcare, where AI is being integrated into everyday clinical workflows in practical, measurable ways. SiftMed’s progress highlights how companies from Newfoundland and Labrador are contributing to that shift by developing tools that support both providers and patients.

At Bounce, we’re proud to support companies like SiftMed that are helping strengthen the connection between innovation and frontline care.
