Bounce Hackathon 2023
March 24 – 26, 2023
MUN Faculty of Medicine, 300 Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s, NL
A weekend of intense innovation, learning, and networking for healthcare enthusiasts. Join forces with like-minded individuals to pitch an idea to revolutionize healthcare, and win big!

Attending the event allowed me to network with experts in my field, gain exposure to new ideas and approaches, and potentially lead to new opportunities. Provided a great opportunity to learn and grow.
I met a ton of incredibly talented and passionate people, worked on solving real problems that people in this Province face every day. Problem-solving doesn’t have to be a huge task. Technology can help us solve many problems, but we need to understand the problem first
The event pushed me outside of our comfort zone forcing me to think creatively. I learned new skills, gained different problem-solving approaches, and valuable lessons in team management.
I enjoyed the opportunity to network with many smart and like minded people. There is such a huge opportunity for innovation in the world of healthcare. I used to think hackathons were only for developers and scientific people, but I know now that anyone with good ideas can participate.

FAQ
How long are the pitches?
5 minutes
How many teams are selected from the first round?
3 teams from each room (total 6)
Are teams expected to develop software as part of their solution?
No. Any form of demonstration, illustration and/or detailed description of the solution will suffice.
Is it necessary to solve a problem related to emergency services?
Yes. All problems and solutions need to be tied back to the prompt which references emergency services. This does not mean that the solution couldn’t involve things outside of the traditional emerg but it is the team’s responsibility to make the connection for the judges.
Is it necessary to have a technology element?
Yes. All problems and solutions need to be tied back to the prompt which references using technology. A problem/solution that just involves adding more $’s or people and doing things the same as always will not meet the requirements.
What will judges be looking for?
1) A clear problem identification 2) A clear proposal for a solution 3) An understanding of how the solution would be implemented
What else matters to the judges?
1) That there is a “new approach” using technology in some way 2) That both staff and patient experience have been considered 3) That the solution would have a significant impact if implemented
Does the presentation itself count in the evaluation?
Yes. Both the oral and graphical components are assessed along with evidence of teamwork and the ability to respond to questions.
