Meet your Judges

Chris Dunne
Entrepreneurship (Idea Factory)
With 12 years’ experience working with marketing agencies in both Toronto and St. John’s, Chris currently holds the role of Director of Agency Development for Idea Factory – one of Newfoundland & Labrador’s leading marketing firms. Specializing in the tech sector, he works with dozens of local tech and tech enabled organizations to help build brands, scale marketing efforts, and drive revenue.
A former Marketing Magazine ‘Top 30 Under 30’ and ‘Young Professional of the Year’ by The St. John’s Northeast Rotary, he has partnered in various start-ups – including Rock Solid Media and Brownie Points – and currently is Owner/Operator of The Roving Restaurant. As a board member with GolfNL, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Conservation Corps, he’s passionate about making Newfoundland & Labrador a place to thrive for the next generation.

Bronwyn Bridges
MedTech (PragmaClin)
As Atlantic Canada’s 30 Under 30, Bronwyn Bridges is passionate about equal access to healthcare, neurodegenerative diseases, mental health awareness, and driving change through digital health solutions.
Bronwyn is the CEO and Co-founder of PragmaClin, a MedTech company that has developed a digital assessment tool for neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease. Bronwyn has helped to leverage over one million dollars in non-dilutive government funding and received over three hundred thousand dollars through pitch competition wins.
Bronwyn has published research about the Pathology of Parkinson’s Disease and the Potential Benefit of Dietary Polyphenols and has presented at several conferences on her work in the digital health space. She sits on the local Parkinson’s Disease board and the Academic Council at Memorial University.
She has won several awards over her research career such as Youth of the Year, Terry Fox Humanitarian Scholar, National Impact Award in AgeTech, and over a dozen awards within the past year for her accomplishments in the MedTech field. Bronwyn has been named one of the top entrepreneurs in Canada as well as listed as the top early stage company to come out of a university.

Ron Johnson
VP of Innovation (Eastern Health)
Ron Johnson has approximately 30 years of progressive career experience in health care from front-line delivery to executive management. As Eastern Health’s vice-president, innovation and rural health, Ron holds overall responsibility for various program areas including innovation and rural health, among others. He is currently on assignment with the Newfoundland and Labrador Transformation and Planning Office which is leading the development of a new provincial health organization.

Blaine Edwards
MedTech (SiftMed)
Blaine Edwards is the Director of Strategic Partnerships at Sift Med, a St. John’s based startup that uses AI to organise medical records. He has a diverse background in privacy legislation, medical technology, innovation, and business development.Previous to joining SiftMed he was responsible for business development of a Silicon Valley backed biotechnology firm. He was previously the Entrepreneur in Residence at Bounce Health Innovation, a healthtech focused incubator backed by public and private investment. From 2016-2020 he was the Privacy Officer for the NL Department of Health and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada.The research for his masters of science degree was completed on the commercialisation of science based university spinouts.He is a proud supporter of his hometown soccer team the St. Lawrence Laurentians, and has competed in 7 championship finals of the Royal St. John’s Regatta, winning two.

Mandy Woodland
MedTech (AmpHealth)
Mandy is co-founder and CEO of Amp Health, a digital health company focused on the prevention of chronic disease. With backgrounds in medical research, health ethics, law, and innovation she’s worked in a variety of roles in the health space, including as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at MCE/Bounce and as a member of Hacking Health St. John’s. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Innovation Business Investment Corp (NL), and is committed to innovation and growth in Newfoundland & Labrador. Mandy loves attending Hacking Health because it connects people with diverse experiences to solve real-world health problems, bringing to light ideas that might not otherwise be illuminated.

Sarah Power
MedTech (MUN)
Sarah Power is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University. Sarah completed a B.Eng. (electrical) at Memorial University, followed by an M.A.Sc. (electrical engineering) and Ph.D. (biomedical engineering) at the University of Toronto. Sarah joined Memorial University as a faculty member in 2015. Her main research is in the area of EEG-based brain-computer interfaces for rehabilitation and neuroergonomics applications. Sarah has been involved in Bounce Health Innovation since 2019 through its partnership with the Faculty of Medicine. She is very happy to support the Hackathon and its mission to inspire ideas for medtech solutions that will improve the delivery of healthcare to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Niamh Redmond
IT Services and IT Consulting (Niamh Redmond Consulting)
Niamh Redmond is a fractional design and product leader/ advisor for start-ups and scale-ups, including MedTech companies. She has over 18 years experience working both in-house and on the product design agency/ consultancy side for a range of clients in a variety of industries, including Enterprise Technology and Fortune 500 companies, through to Healthcare & Educational Institutions, Government, Airports, and non-profits. She founded her own business in 2013 to partner with clients to design, build and improve products, services and experiences that contribute to the betterment of people and society. Niamh is known for her expertise in product strategy, design and UX research to help drive customer satisfaction, business growth and revenue. She has a Master’s degree from Technological University Dublin, and studied her undergraduate degree at Dublin City University, Ireland. Additionally, she has continuously upskilled by taking programs in Product Management, Design and Entrepreneurship at UBC, Emily Carr University of Art and Design and MUN. She has previously served as a judge for the Vancouver UX Awards, Vancouver start-up week, Hootsuite hackathons, and is volunteering her time at the Bounce Health Innovation hackathon to support the local St. John’s ecosystem and the development of the next generation of healthcare and MedTech innovators.

Meet your Mentors

Liam Flannagin
Entrepreneurship (techNL)
Liam Flanagan has been a committed supporter of Newfoundland and Labrador’s tech sector since 2015. Currently, he leads the Ready Talent team at techNL, connecting job seekers and tech employers with resources, opportunities, and education in our province. In 2022, the Ready Talent team helped more than 20 job seekers find careers in tech and hopes to improve that number in 2023. Liam’s experience supporting early-stage start-ups while leading Genesis’ Evolution Program and rapidly growing scale-ups while working with Invest Ottawa have given him ample opportunity to see what helps tech ideas succeed at all levels. Liam is excited to jump into this hackathon and provide lean start-up methodology, pitching, and customer interview advice!

Jake Head
Full Stack Devlopment (Bounce Health Innovation)
Jake Head is a passionate computer engineering student from Memorial University. Jake has had three consecutive work-terms with Bounce Health Innovation working in a role which involved App Development, Database Management and Project Management! Most recently, Jake has been conducting research on low-code development as a means to prototype and create software for entrepreneurs and companies. Jake has been experimenting with low-code to build various applications for Bounce Health Innovation, including a website, a data management dashboards, an analytics dashboards, and more. In his free time Jake finds joy in skiing, chess, competitive programming, soccer and spending time with friends and family.

Heather Zurel
Data Science (Instrumar Limited)
Heather Zurel is a Data Scientist who has worked in medical research in NL since 2012. She is experienced in data analysis for human genomics and epidemiology. Heather is knowledgeable in Canadian and NL privacy, and ethics regulations related to research and private biotech and medtech companies.

Tom Cooper
Risk Assessment (MUN)
Dr. Tom Cooper is a professor at the Faculty of Business at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Cooper lectures in the areas of strategy, risk management, management consulting, and ethics/values at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research is primarily focused on the interplay between strategy and risk management. Dr. Cooper’s research has been published widely in industry and academic publications. He has won a number of awards for his research, teaching and engagement activities.

Angela Gill
Innovation (Genoa Design)
Angela Gill has a long career in the product space including local and international experience in medical device, high-tech manufacturing, information technology and primary industries. As a Product Manager at a leading 3D modelling company, Angela is known for her expertise in process improvement, technology development and scaling of operations. With an engineering degree from Memorial University, she is passionate about leading and driving solutions to current challenges within the medical and health industries.
